always playing, guessing, and getting it wrong.

sometimes an under drawing is most annoying, and find myself almost never doing it. so, to get more joy out of the picture i just wing it, paint shapes or draw lines, then fill in the blanks. the spontaneity of it i guess is more satisfying. not to say i exclude intended meaning from the improvised image, rather i allow more room for the medium to naturally develop its statement. included is a self portrait, the bottom one.

here are some illustrations i did, out of 23 total images, for JibJab Jr.'s new line of kids books for the iPad. this one is about trucks of course. i'm not particularly fond of automobiles at all, in fact i pretty much hate cars in general, BUT i had a pretty great time doing these. the photo of the character is temporary and can be replaced with whatever face you want when you download the app. from the site. it's fairly inexpensive plus has fun animation to go along with it as well. if you've got and iPad check it out. it's a super cute kids book with swell writing and rhyming.

while wasting time looking at film credits on animation artists i've heard of but have not met, i came upon this great interview by Tee Bosustow from "Toonin to the World of Animation." in his interview with art director/ designer Mike Giaimo, he sheds some great light on the philosophy of being an artist first before performing your "artistic" duties at your studio job. as examples, he name drops some important figures in UPA 50's animation like Jules Engels and David Weidman (two artists i admire greatly), and how they pushed their own creative endeavors beyond work. it's incredibly inspiring listening to Giaimo reveal the secrets behind the success of all animation by explaining the brilliance of these UPA men and their passion for creating good art even previous to working at a studio. by being an artist first, a master of their craft, they've obtained the skills necessary to express what is aesthetically pleasing. Giaimo mentions how the UPA men didn't see themselves as anything other than artist who fell into animation. this to me is sexy talk to my ears, words of great encouragement. i for one see myself as an animator. but it's my hope to escape that mentality and lure that artist within.

i just wanted to say thank you to those who came to the goodbye party last friday. i hope you all had as much of a nice time as i did. i will honestly miss you guys. for those who couldn't make it, i gave out a lil gift, and this is what it said:

this was another fun attempt at a mixed medium piece. it's about 22 3/4 x 20in. notice no character design bologna in it. the next one will be bigger with maybe a more abstract/subtextual meaning, and a character to fit the scene. but, i still have more flowy nature scenes filling my stomach and mind i need to get out. we will see.

ALSO, this is going to be auctioned off for a benefit to stop human trafficking. my kind friends Andres Salaff and Sunha Yoon are putting on the show where many other amazing friends will be showing work and selling it. come and show your support/and or BUY :)

i hope to eventually brake out of the bad habit of working in such small scales, like my lil book, and actually try to complete finished pieces of work, preferably the kind that go on walls.

this is my first attempt i guess. it's 12x36 which might be small to you, but to me it's like being at the beach and getting swallowed by a towering 3 foot wave. in time i'll get used to it and ride them 20 foot waves. and, in the process get deeper and more sincere with the content behind each image. my goal isn't to use the means for creating art like that of a character design assignment. in animation you have a natural tendency to draw a single meaningless character with all the right straights and curves and clear silhouette standing there blandly. most of the time it's a cleche' concept that arrives to you first. i'd like to break that mentality and put real, unique meaning and design to my images be it abstract or story-driven.

during my short stay in Kenya i had the chance to go with my brother and document a very small piece of a much larger poverty-stricken community. indeed what we saw was something that was not only sad, but in a way disappointing.

my brother ben and i put together this short 10 minute film showing a bit of the troubling situations of families who live on a dump site in Nakuru. some of the dialogue may be a bit difficult to understand do to a lack of translators, but with the small amount of resources that were available to us i feel the emotion and expression of these kind peoples faces is enough to deliver a heart wrenching impression. it certainly did me and hope it will you.

this is a dump site me and brother ben visited called galilee. over 400 people live on this piece of land collecting garbage, building their own homes, raising families, barely getting by. we arrived there with the hopes of putting a little smile on the kids faces. we passed out bits of sweets for them. they seemed to like it. i think it was enough of a joy that a couple white guys, mazungus we're called, showed up just to say hi to the kiddies. so cute! later i'll post a little documentary me and ben put together concerning this site and the people there. nothing huge just a little bit of an awareness...

been back for a while now, two months to be exact, and man am i fighting the bitter feelings of L.A life again or maybe just life in general. nevertheless, times have been too good. my time in africa with my brother and new friends i've made there was absolutely grand! indeed God is good. thank you to my friends at ROHI in kenya who accepted me into their family. you have the biggest hearts i've ever seen.

that's a picture of my older brother, benny boy, and a cool group of kids he gets to hang with. he's doing honest mission type work in kenya now...and soon enough i get to join him for the holidays. yup. on the 21st i'll be leaving to dubai for a looong layover, then nairobi, kenya's capital. from there it's a two hour drive to nakuru...where i'll be living for the next two weeks. am i excited? very much, yes. never really been out of the states before, so a large step out of my usual pattern is sort of a necessary blessing at the moment. it's not just the idea of seeing a new environment and culture, or enjoying the company of my wicked awesome brother, but that i get to engage with some brilliant africans and try to put new bits of ideas and knowledge in my small head. there's a variety of life over there i want to get to know whether it's the large families with hard working children or the kids who struggle day to day huffing glue, getting by on whatever means. i want to be around a new pace of people, see a brighter and less commercial driven landscape, and inhale as much fresher air as i can to replenish my lungs from los angeles' toxic damaged existence. i'd like it if i wasn't the only one getting something out of my time there, that maybe i can give a little something back. i guess i'll have to follow my brothers moves and see how he respectfully leaves his fingerprints. he's a natural generous person.

when i get back i'll have some fun book drawings and photos to show and stories to hopefully tell without butchering it too much. maybe there will be enough stuff between me and my brother to make a fun little book out of. one can hope. actually, ben keeps a great blog of his stories and interesting happenings with posts every week. check it at benvose.blogspot.com. leave a comment too. anyways, i really wish you all a joyful holiday and new year. happy birthday to the man, sir jesus, born in bethlehem 2010 years ago, BABY!

a friday session

calarts figure drawing session on friday run by talented johnny gomez. as you can see it's been a while. but nevertheless it was a blast to just sit there and create...like old times. the "energy"(like we used to call it) of the room wasn't overwhelmingly uplifting (mostly a lack of not knowing the group) but it's a great feeling to kinda shut out the surroundings and hone in on the figure, the paper, and piece of chalk in your hand. you try not to question each line you make or section you smear, but rather go with the flow of composition and shapes within it. i'll take a minute to see what's in front of me, get chills from the pose and lighting, then just thoughtfully, without too much mental pressure, draw it out. what a struggle though haha...started with 20 sec., then 1 min., 5's and 10's.

this was a spot i worked on with jahmad rollins (illworkz) and other friends. the high end stroller company, Bugaboo, is donating 1% of their income to stop the spread of AIDS in Africa. HURRAY! with such a limited amount of time, a single month, we were able to complete the designs, boards, and animation/color. twas a rough time, but i went away knowing a little more.

when i was a kid my mom use to airbrush x-men characters onto t-shirts for us. she'd steal comic cards out of our collection binders and recreate the characters onto something we could wear. i knew what she was up to when i heard the air compressor running in the garage. i'd sneak in at nights to see the process. it made me happy. thanks mom.

had some down time working with my friend jahmad at his studio ILLWORKZ!, so i just straight aheaded a little animation, then colored it, and put some music to it. hope your head hurts when you're done watching it.

first things first...i know i haven't been here in a while so it's only deserving that the first thing i talk about is the sad passing of my teacher Mike. Where CalArts will be after this great loss i haven't a clue. all i can say is how far it had come with Mike in the picture. and speaking for myself, he was a real blessing to my growth as an artist and thinker.

entering into his figure drawing class, held in the Palace, for the first time i was slightly nervous. the automatic vibes of the classroom went beyond just merely understanding the human figure. the lighting was very dim, kinda gloomy. empty black walls with piles of props and garbage and old drawings in the corners. and just a few drawing horses to sit on. i sat on the ground. drawings started at two minutes, then to fives after a while. i wasn't sure if i was getting the hang of it. looking around it seemed i wasn't alone on that one. when mike asked the model to start the new set with tens i panicked. he then asked a few guys to move that old old motor cycle onto the model stand. i swear the whole room was confused. what the hell kind of FIGURE drawing class was this? mike made it to the middle of the room next to that motorcycle leaning on it a bit for balance. he started talking about observing the model, then looking at the shapes of shadows and light and composing it on the page. after his short lecture of metaphors and jargon i eventually started...and failed! i'm pretty sure that whole day was a fail. in fact i remember failing many a times in his class after that. he came over to me and mentioned how i looked pissed at the world. i told him i was having a bad drawing day. he just stared at me with his one blinking eye, then at my drawing , then at the model and said to look at the shapes. he pointed out what the light was doing when it hit her hip and how the shadow swallowed her whole left arm. looking at me blankly again he said, "ok? don't be frustrated. you're doing great." for some reason that was enough for me.

after that, mike's class became 6 hours of artistic searching and finding. i was looking at the figure model in a new and unique way. and when he thought you captured it he'd say his classic line, "that's the stuff," then steal it from you with little hope of ever seeing that drawing again. but it would leave you smiling for the whole weekend. of course digging through the stacks and stacks of drawings on his desk a the end of a semester in search of yours was no real picnic.

so, thank you mike for the bit of confidence and knowledge. i will truly think of you when trying to achieve the quality of "that's the stuff."

this was a fun little test i did after my final review at Disney. the following week there was nothing really for us to work on, so i felt like doing an animation, something with cool gymnastics (which i new a little bit about having done it for ten years), which led to putting live action behind it, which then led to motion tracking, and so on...twas fun, and now i wanna do another one real badly, one with more story and acting. i started putting sound behind it, but maybe later i'll do that. my end date at work is the 27th of March, so i'll be patient till then before i attempt new experiments...enjoy. cheers!

since i've been living in dirty L.A i've found it enjoyable to go drawing at bars once in a while, where it's even dirtier, but the people are pretty interesting. oh the stories that i overhear, the gossip, and drunken nonsensical statements about life and relationships. it's kinda understandable why folk go to bars to "relieve" themselves from the "problems" they've accumulated through the week. friday after work, you start your evening feeling super lousy, so you make your way towards the nearest and most "promising" joint. then you buy a few drinks for yourself and the hot chicks across from you, and you just get a talking and talking and talking. of course there is a giant bill you have to deal with afterwards, which then will probably add on to the headache you'll have in the morning when you search through your pants pocket and find the receipt with large numbers printed across. but, at least you had a good time, if you could remember it...p.s.this is not from self experience...remember, i'm the guy drawing in the corner all alone listening in to people's conversations, the weirdo. however, i sometimes can't keep the pretty ladies from coming up and talking to me.

as little kids you don't exactly foresee, or really care for that matter, the journey your life goes on. for my sister kirstin, i don't think she knew exactly either. since we were young ones i knew that she had a heart so big she'd let it naturally pave the road of her journey. thus, she's in Kenya right now helping people and growing in many many ways. i can't believe this little girl i used to know is no longer that little, that in fact she's more mature and selfless than most. i feel she's doing more of Jesus' good work by actually DOING GOOD than those soapbox preachers who are all talk. every day she has to wake up and know she's in a place that has the appearance of being apart from God and his love...but the truth is that everyday people like my sister are there to express to those who feel abandoned that there is a true love and good, one without a soapbox, that involves aid to the sick and dying, communication to the broken hearted and motherless, and real hope. that's where her heart is and that's why she is so amazing...thanks kirst...

the story trainees had an assignment to develop a story for the tortoise and the hare, where the hare was at a bar drowning his sorrows in booz (cause he's a loser), while the tortoise was humbly next to him sipping at his apple martini...that wasn't the exact scenario that was set up but along the same lines. so these are just a few characters. nothing crazy really...

since i've been away for a while with many stories to tell i'll just keep things simple and say happy holidays, and have a GREAT 2009!!! for me 2008 was a learning experience. lots of pain...lots...and many joys. i will say that i am a blessed man. thank you God for giving me a heart that beats and a brain that kinda works. any new year resolutions friends? i have a few actually...but i won't discuss them, haaaaa. well it's been swell.

this is a character from "The Aristocats", you know, the old guy that's like 100 years old. we get a chance to have a simple class to do tis sort of thing. kinda awesome. this is about 4 hours of work, so lots left to do. in case you didn't know, the scene we're studying from is one of Milt Kaul's. the drawing is totally appealing...so i have to try and grab that. kinda difficult, but it's on its way there. cheers friends.

hi friends. i did my first oil painting yesterday. i guess it's called plein air painting. took bout 1hr 30mn, something like that. twas freakin fun, the most fun i've had, art wise, in a long time. it's nothing AMAZING but i rather like it...has a good mood...

this is something i did super fast. the photo i took on a road trip back from Missouri with my bro and sis. again, nothin CRAZY, just some fun...

hands. i love hands. the first one is my grandpa's hand. it looks evil don't it. but it really aint. he's a farmer with one arm. the one he has left looks like this. the next one is my sister. she was feeding a cow, pulled it out of the mouth and had gross goo attached to it. i think i captured it pretty good. had to use my slick manual focus agility to get it in time...she didn't like the way the slime felt.

for some reason i enjoy the idea of evil rising to power...in a drawing that is! the concept of something, a situation, a character so dark that it makes me feel a bit of discomfort. maybe i'm crazy, i don't know. but, this was something for an assignment we had to do involving textures. the evil thing's scales was roof shingles, the sky involved crazy waves from the ocean, and the rocks were cave textures mixed together. it was fun...so onto doing another one. hurray...cheers...

oh, if you want, come up with a story for this one too and let me know. i've got some ok ones brewing...

p.s. i know this picture doesn't show it exactly, but i love my family and friends. life is good for me at the moment and i really can't complain. i hope those of you who have that evil thing rising from the dark depths within, well i hope you can look to the bright side of life and get rid of that nasty thing. thank you God.

so, today i got a chance to talk to my mentor, mike gabriel, a little more. can't wait to learn from this great guy. to give you an idea on his abundant visionary skills, he directed the totally awesome short, "Larenzo", a while back (hasn't been released yet). i new it existed, and i really wanted to see it, so he happily showed it to me. GREAT! so f'n cool man. it's been a pretty good day. i am so blessed with everything. i'm hungry! enjoy these characters...that you'll probably never see in a Disney film.

hi everyone. it's been a while...again. i'm so naughty. well, i won't tell you bout my life much, blah blah. lot's has happened though, new and interesting things. i had my first week at Disney as a Visual Development trainee. so far so good. my mentor is Mike Gabriel (a great guy!) and i'm looking forward to what i'll be working on with him. this first week i had few different classes leaving me with lots of time to get used to my work area, cintiq, and just enjoying my freedom of painting what i want. my freedom will lessen as time goes on, but it's been great up to tis point. it's sounds kinda snooty saying i'm in "visual development", so i'm just a guy who draws there. these are the things i did so far. the bar one i did before, but didn't get a chance to finish...cheers, enjoy friends...

so, i went to comic con. it was pretty awesome, crowded, and lots of talent. i got to see some of my skillful friends at there booths selling there awesome art. here's a picture i whipped up myself during off time of work that isn't so skillful but kinda fun. i'm gonna push the next one i do a lot more.

its hard to be satisfied with life or just ok with it...i think going outside and getting fresh air helps a bit. maybe healthy clean air would be better, an area away from most city places. these are just a couple guys working on that. this is actually one of my goals as well...give myself time to think. cheers!

SO...it has been a long'ol time since I've touched this thing. I am so so sorry to all of you who enjoy checking this dump of a site out. Let me just tell you in brief that this was one heck of a year...SO INCREDIBLY ROUGH!!! As much as I want to go into specifics I don't think I will...for your sake. But, this is my final film from from my final year at cartoon college (CalArts.) I really really hope you enjoy it. this is a little girl that i was thinking about using for my film. kinda cute which fits great...now all i have to do is figure out what her personality is...what she wants...what she's about...that kind of thing.

clowns! i really like clowns a lot, but with little time i wasn't able to push it to the limit i'd have liked, but i think there's an all right variety of character in these, maybe i'm wrong...i don't know anything...

witches were the subject for the rick maki assignment. these were just rough ideas; didn't put much time in details or more fun stuff, but i still enjoyed it. the whole class had really great stuff. every week i put the artwork on the wall, being a T.A and all, and i find that i never explore enough, or that i didn't have enough time to explore more. dang! i guess that's the point of doing this becuase you need to get torn to pieces before getting better...right? i don't know. cheers folks!

a bit o inspiration artwork i did in a wee bit of time to get my film idea rolling. it could be fun. i'm going for something with more humor this year. by the looks of it, it's far from humorous, but through a more well drafted story, it could be gold. i'm shooting for bronze though...no high expectations.

so........here. junk work from illustration class. just trying to enjoy the time. i want to take it more seriously but sometimes the annoying pressure to draw this way or that way gets...in the way. i think i do better when i'm not surrounded by lots of peeps. this is a flaw i must fix. oh, and some quick demon designs. i wanted these evil creatures in my film this year, no these ones specifically, but just demons in general...

it's been a while friends. so i started my last year of school...don't know where i'm going after this, but not really freakin out too much. rather, a few of the many priorities of mine for getting through the year is having a nice film, fun work, three years with my girlfriend, a greater love and relationship with the man himself, JESUS (#1 priority), and good contact with my family. oh, i'd like to be a better friend and humanitarian. art is good, but being an even good-er person is better. cheers folks! enjoy a bit of the cleche', one of my favorite words...

sometimes i draw real sketchy stuff. it's possible it could be clear, but a lot of the time it lacks, to me, an original appeal. that's something i defenitely want to work on. no worries though. nevertheless, it's tons of fun. also, the idea of using just two shades of markers to complete the sketch is enjoyable. cheers!

i woke up early this morning because me and jason are going to the Timpanogos caves, so i had to call and make sure they were open today. then, i couldn't go back to sleep. lied in bed for an hour, then woke up to paint the really well lit room that we're staying in. like i said before, i don't do much digital painting, this is my first round of paintings i've actually done, so i'm still learning. it's lots of fun to try and get the lighting right, the texture, the mood, and a sense of design. once i get an idea about how to lay color down and make it look accurate, i'll try and apply a better sense of design and cool shapes because that to me is really important. yup yup!!! cheers

p.s. thanks to Tom, who i share an office with. he's kind enough to show me a few tricks in Photoshop. hopefully i'll catch up to him some day. keep growing Tom. leave me choking on the dust particle trails you leave behind.

there's something funny about starting a new sketchbook...the first page somehow intimidates you for no reason at all. why do people feel compelled to make the first page look their absolute best. IT'S A SKETCHBOOK FOLKS! i'm a hypocrite of these words, sadly enough. i tore the first page out, mostly because of anger and just being annoyed by the things around me at the time. i think what it is is the fact that annoying people who seem all too satisfied with life come up to you with that "let's see if i'm better than you" attitude and ask to look through your book. thus, having a great first page would hopefully shut them up and make them feel stupid. YUP! my goal is to make people feel dumb; that's the ultimate purpose for this new sketchbook. conclusion...i'll tear out hundreds of pages before i get that amazing first page just so the people who look through it can be put to shame. thank you God for this new meaning in life!!! i am so forever thankful.

i found that i've sinned. my first page reeks badly, everyone around me is much much better...so now i'm gong to hell. sorry i failed you o God.

Tribute to a good friend...

Just yesterday one of my good friends, Harold Rosas, passed away. I got to know Harold through a great Bible study he was leading at a cafe called Bay Street Cafe. Every Monday a bunch of people would meet to learn about God. My brother, sister and I would show up and find Harold already there with his Bible and notebook out ready to teach. He was the biggest Bible geek I ever knew.

He always wore black. I don't know why, it's just what he wore. He also never wore any other kind of t-shirt except the black ones he'd get at Christian rock concerts. Time spent wih him at his church, his house to watch a movie, or even at his work's picnic party (because he worked at Starbucks for the longest time) was never anything but a fun time.

I wanted to talk about Harold because he would have been the kind of guy that if you had a question, about life and such, then he's the one you ask. The answer may not have been exactly what you wanted, but it was the truth, and this guy was full of it. For him, truth was the Bible. So, if you wanted the truth about something he'd give it to you, gently though, of course. The many questions I'd have for him were never brain-busters that he couldn't fathom. He'd simply point out a piece of scripture and tell me to read it...IN CONTEXT. That's how he did things, by the book. Harold changed many lives, at least by his words, while he left it to God to do the rest. Job well done good and faithful servant!

You rule Harold!
